Colombo MC seeks assistance of police, military to catch people disposing waste illegally

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has sought assistance from the Police and the Military to catch people disposing solid waste indiscriminately at public places.

Acting Municipal Council Commissioner Lalith Wickramaratne said strict legal action will be taken against those who engage in disposing garbage illegally violating waste management regulations.

The CMC official also said that from today the council will refrain from collecting un-sorted garbage.

The municipal commissioner also pointed out that to make waste management successful, an attitude change in people is needed.

The official said there is no problem in disposing systematically sorted garbage as the waste will be directed wither to make compost or recycle.

“The sorted waste is sent to compost yards managed by the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry or the recycling projects, the problem lies with the non-sorted garbage,” he said.

Acting Municipal Council Commissioner noted that in the last few days, garbage piled up in Maradana, Maligawatte, Borella, Dematagoda and Slave Island areas.

The Colombo Municipal Council says that the people in those areas do not dispose the garbage properly.

“Separating garbage into degradable and non-degradable is not a difficult task. The problem is not because of the ignorance of the people, but the lack of motivation,” the official said.

“The general public needs to realize that they have to endure the consequences of their attitude,” Acting Municipal Council Commissioner said.
