Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has summoned heads of four government institutions to a committee meeting today to inquire about the Batticaloa Campus, also known as Sharia University.
COPE Chairman Sunil Handunneththi has said that the heads of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training, the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and the University Grants Commission have been summoned for the inquiry to be held at 2.30 pm today.
MP Handunneththi said that the purpose of calling the meeting is to start preliminary investigations into ascertaining the nature of the institution called Batticaloa Campus, whether it’s a university or vocational school or another institution.
He said there are a number of issues regarding the establishment such as who invested in it and how, who owns it, is it a public investment, private investment, or a mixed project, what are the terms and conditions if state is involved, what are the courses that are being taught, how are the lands provided and a preliminary investigation need to be conducted.
The COPE Chairman said following the preliminary inquiry the heads of the Hiras Foundation which is said to be building the Batticaloa Campus, will be summoned to the Committee.
