The Attorney General today informed the Court of Appeal that the investigation into the Welikada Prison riot in 2012 has mostly been completed.
The deadly riot at the country’s largest and most crowded prison on November 9th, 2012 was of an enormous magnitude resulting in deaths of 27 inmates, and injuries to a prison officer and 20 prisoners.
The state attorney told the court that about 80 percent of the investigations into the incident has been completed.
He made this statement when a petition filed by Sudesh Silva, an inmate at the Welikada Prison during the riot, requesting a formal investigation into the deaths of 27 inmates, was taken up for hearing today.
The State Counsel stated that they had already reported to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court regarding these investigations and had obtained the necessary instructions from the Courts.
The two-judge bench of President of the Appeals Court Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Shiran Gunaratne fixed the next hearing date for February 15 and ordered the state Counsel to report the progress of the investigation at the next hearing.
