Health Minister, Rajitha Senaratne says that a tax of one rupee will be charged per gramme of sugar for every soft drink that exceeds six grammes of sugar.
The aim of this tax is to reduce the consumption of sugar in the country.
Minister Senaratne added that this initiative has already received approval by the World Health Organisation. Previously, a traffic light color coding system was introduced to indicate the level of sugar contained in all soft drinks.
Moreover, the minister expressed this statement at an award ceremony where he awarded more than 1400 diplomas for nurses.
