The Myanmar military has taken control of the country detaining leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians in the early hours.
Ms Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won enough seats to form a government in November’s election.
The military claims that the votes are fraudulent.
A state of emergency had been declared for one year and power transferred, said Military television.
The coup comes after tensions rose between the civilian government and the military following a disputed election.
The actions taken by the military have been internationally condemned and by human rights experts.
