Sri Lanka Parliament has received the ruling given by the Supreme Court disqualifying Geetha Kumarasinghe from holding a Parliamentary seat.
Accordingly, the Election Commission has also been informed of the decision, the Speaker’s office announced on the 7th of November.
Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court on the 7th of November ruled that Galle District United People’s Freedom alliance (UPFA) parliamentarian Geetha Kumarasinghe is not entitled to hold the post of a Member of Parliament as she had contested the election while being a dual citizen.
The Supreme Court on November 2nd upholding the ruling delivered by the Appeals Court ruled that MP Geetha Kumarasinghe cannot hold a seat in Parliament due to her dual citizenship.
A five judge bench headed by the Chief Justice Priyasath Depp and comprising justices Sisira De Abrew, Buvaneka Aluvihare, Anil Gunaratne and Nalin Bandara unanimously decided that Kumarasinghe as a dual citizen of Sri Lanka and Switzerland is ineligible to contest 2015 parliamentary election under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
Five voters of the Galle district filed a petition in the Court of Appeals requesting court to declare the veteran actress is ineligible to remain as a parliamentarian while holding a dual citizenship.
