A petition was filed against the Colombo Port City Development Project citing four issues.
Three of the four mentioned were possible harm that can be caused to:
- The coast
- Coral reefs
The fourth mentioned int he petition is that ‘the state does not have the right to lease land for this project’. The petitioner pointed out that according to the Act establishing the SL Ports Authority, the the government cannot lease the land.
When the case was taken up at the Court of Appeal today (October 30), notices were issued on respondents to appear before court on December 13, 2017.
Among the respondents cited in the petition are;
- Sri Lanka Ports Authority
- The Department of Coast Conservation
- Attorney General
The petition was filed by the Centre for Environmental Justice Pvt. Ltd. two years ago in 2015.
