The police said the tear gas was used to disperse the people protesting the death of a little girl in an accident in Kegalle Saturday morning.
The protest was staged at Thoranagahapitiya area on the Kegalle – Avissawella main road until near midnight yesterday. Completely blocking the traffic on the Kegalle – Avissawella main road.
The Police fired tear gas around 11: 30 pm to disperse the people and clear the road for traffic.
Police said 13 people were arrested in connection with the protest for destruction of public property and inconveniencing the public.
The bus traveling at a high speed killed a seven-year-old girl at Pindeniya on the Kegalle -Avissawella Road Yesterday morning.
Her brother and grandmother were seriously wounded in the accident and admitted to the Kegalle General Hospital. The victims were walking on the side of the road when the passenger bus reportedly traveling at excessive speed crashed onto them.
Tense situation arose following the accident when the infuriated people in the area attacked the bus and the driver.
The bus driver was arrested and remanded when he was produced before the Kegalle Magistrate Court.
