President advises CBSL to extend deadline to exchange defaced currency notes

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has been advised by  President Maithripala Sirisena to extend the time period given to submit defaced currency notes, to March 31, 2018.

Prior to this announcement, the CBSL made a declaration that defaced currency notes will be of no value after December 31, 2017.

The specific announcement was made as a part of the clean currency note policy.

Dr. Indrajith Kumaraswamy, about the extended time period, stated that President Sirisena advised the CBSL to extend the date, considering the busy schedule of the public during the festive season.

Therefore, CBSL urges the public to exchange defaced currency notes from the nearest authorised bank before March 31, 2018.

Legal action could be taken against those involved in damaging currency notes, under section 1949 of No. 58 of the Financial Law.
