Senior Deputy Solicitor General of the Attorney General’s Department Thusith Mudalige has passed away.
Thusith Mudalige passed away this morning and was 49 at the time of his demise.
The Senior Deputy Solicitor General had died while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the National Hospital.
He had been admitted to the hospital due to an emergency health condition last week.
Prior to his career as a prosecutor, Mudalige served in the Criminal Division of the Attorney General’s Department.
He was a renowned nation’s expert in the prosecution of money laundering and complex financial crimes.
Mudalige was responsible for several landmark convictions, including the trial of the murderers of former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, who received the death sentence, which was upheld by a full bench of the Supreme Court.
Addressing the demise of Mudalige, President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) Saliya Peries said Thusith Mudalige was one of the finest prosecutors he had come across in the Attorney General’s Department.
He said Mudalige had a sharp and brilliant mind and was conscientious, adding that his humble, soft-spoken, and simple manner could lull many a defence counsel into complacency.
“He would with mathematical precision build up his case. I have been opposed to him in several cases and always admired him for his precision. He was an officer with a spine who acted according to his conscience. His illness and passing away is a sad loss. My deepest sympathies to his wife and family. May he rest in peace,” Saliya Peiris added.
