Speaker says false news based on undisclosed facts in the bond report disgraced lawmakers

Sri Lanka’s Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday said the false news reports based on the facts in the bond commission report that were not disclosed caused a great disgrace to the parliamentarians and the parliament and to the country as a whole.

The Speaker made these comments briefing the House on the bond commission report.

Speaker Jayasuriya confirmed to the House that he received the C-350 to C-360 sections of the report, compiled by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate and inquire into the Issuance of Treasury Bonds by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The particular section was not released to the parliament by the President’s office when the Commission report was tabled in parliament in January.

The joint opposition members at the time alleged that about 100 pages of the report are missing in the copies handed over to the parliament.

The Speaker further said that since some of the documents relevant to the commission inquiry were not disclosed, various false observations have been made in the society based on the undisclosed information.

“The false media reports have been a huge disgrace not only on the MPs but also on the parliament and the country as a whole and it’s a very regrettable situation,” he said.

“Since I have received only a portion of the documents, C-350 to 360 from the entire document today, as unanimously decided by the Committee on Parliamentary Business, as soon as the full text of the documents is received, they will be submitted to the House,” the Speaker informed the assembly.
