Sri Lanka Police arrest 114 for violating election laws

Sri Lanka Police have arrested 114 people for violating election laws, Police Headquarters disclosed Sunday (07).

According to a statement issued by the Police Media Spokesperson’s Office, 76 suspects have been arrested on 35 counts of election law violations since the Local Government Elections were announced in December last year.

Out of the 114 suspects, 53 have been arrested during Police raids for engaging in illegal propaganda activities and the possession of election posters. Another 16 have been arrested for the exhibition of political posters, banners and flags on private vehicles.

Another 38 suspects have been arrested based on 68 counts of election related complaints made to the Police.

The most number of suspects arrested (28) are charged with criminal intimidation and assault.

Police have also recorded several cases of breaking and entering, theft, vandalism and defacing public property as well.
