The Terrorist Investigation Division has arrested a newly elected local government member in connection with the attacks on mosques and Muslim businesses in the Digana area of the Kandy Administrative District during the communal clashes earlier this month. The suspect, identified as Kumara Mohottige Samantha Perera alias Araliya Samantha residing at Digana, No: 302, Rajawella (01), is a member elected to the Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, the police said. Victims of Kandy violence to receive payments for damages today

The Kandy District Secretariat states that compensation will be distributed for properties damaged due to the recent violence in Kandy at 10.00 am on Monday, March 19. Compensations will be given to the owners of businesses and residences damaged by the Sinhalese mob attacks earlier this month. Accordingly, Rs. 500,000 each will be paid to the families of the people died and Rs. 100,000 for each business or house damaged in the violence. During a visit to Kandy last week, Prime Minister Rani Wickremesinghe instructed the officials to assess the damages to the houses, religious places and vehicles and pay compensations appropriately. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that measures will be taken to promptly assess the damage incurred to the properties due to the recent communal clashes in the Kandy district by Friday (16th) and provide compensation to the victims.
