Talawakelle-Lindula UC deputy chairman arrested

The Deputy Chairman of the Talawakelle-Lindula Urban Council, L. Bharathidasan, has been arrested by Talawakelle Police today (09). A case was filed against him in connection with the protest organized against the renaming of the Thondaman Vocational Training Centre in Hatton as the ‘Pool Bank Vocational Training Centre’. He was arrested over a warrant issued for failing to appear before the court on May 10, 2018. Talawakelle Police said that the Deputy Chairman will be produced at the Nuwara-Eliya Court today. The renaming of the Thondaman Vocational Training Centre had sparked protests by supporters of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) in October last year. Overall, the government has not been defeated at local government election – Minister Rajitha Senaratne

When the overall result of the local government election is considered the government has not been defeated and in fact the percentage of the votes for former president Mahinda Rajapaksa's has declined in this election, Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine and the Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Rajitha Senaratne says. Issuing a statement to the media regarding the Local Government Election, Minister Senaratne said this is only a local government election and it was not an election to change the government. UPFA Alliance Executive Committee Meeting held under auspices of the president

The United People’s Freedom Alliance Executive Committee meeting at the Presidential Palace yesterday (Dec 5) was attended by several members of the Joint Opposition including its leader, Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunewardena. The meeting held under the auspices of the President, was attended by the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, Desha Vimukthi Janatha Party and the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party, representing the Joint Opposition. Some of the representatives of these parties were Executive Committee members of the UPFA.
