Two amended Bills to empower Bribery Commission in parliament today

The Government will present two amendment Bills in Parliament today, to empower the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and file cases based on facts revealed by Commissions of Inquiry. The Bills to amend the Commissions of Inquiry Act (Chapter 393) and the Bribery Act (Chapter 26), will be presented at the commencement of sittings today, the Government Information Department said. According the Amendments, the Director General of the Bribery Commission is given the power to file cases under the Bribery Act or Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law based on the findings of the Commissions of Inquiry appointed by the President. Transparency International Sri Lanka commends Bribery Commission for key step in tackling grand corruption

The anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) Monday commended the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABOC) for the swift action to apprehend two top officials of the government for soliciting and accepting a bribe. The TISL in a statement said it applauds the steps taken by the Bribery Commission to arrest the President's Chief of Staff I.H.K. Mahanama and the former Chairman of the State Timber Corporation P. Non-declaration of assets: Fine to be increased to Rs 100,000

A minimum of Rs 100,000 fine has been proposed to the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Act for Non declaration of assets and liabilities. The current penalty for such offence is Rs 1,000.
