National Hospital nurses join hands with union over “fingerprint system” strike

Nurses attached to the Colombo National Hospital and Eye Hospital have decided to carry out a trade union action by taking sick leave today. This move is in support of the strike action launched by the Nurses’ Union of the Sri Jayawardenapura National Hospital. The Nurses Union attached to the Sri Jayawardenapura National Hospital launched the strike action nine days ago over the introduction of a Fingerprint Attendance System.Activities at the hospital have come to a complete standstill while over 100 surgeries conducted on a daily basis have been postponed.

Two people arrested for destroying the Sudeikuda stupa

Two suspects, a driver and owner of a lorry, who were accused of bulldozing the stupa archaeologists dug up in Sudeikuda, Sampur, have been taken into custody . They were arrested as a result of an investigation conducted by Muttur Assistant Police Superintendent Buddhika Manatunga and his team. Police have also found the bulldozer in question and a lorry. Police stated that the operator of the bulldozer met with an accident last Tuesday, December 26, in Chilaw and is currently in critical condition at the Colombo National Hospital. The driver of the lorry used to transport and hide the bulldozer was also hospitalised at the Trincomalee hospital after he met with an accident. Killer of Sri Lankan President’s brother sentenced to 18 years of rigorous imprisonment

A Sri Lankan court has sentenced the accused in the murder of Sri Lankan President's brother in 2015 to 18 years of rigorous imprisonment. Polonnaruwa High Court Judge Nimal Ranaweera yesterday sentenced the accused for killing President Maithripala Sirisena's brother, Pallewatte Gamaralalage Priyantha Sirisena for 18 years rigorous imprisonment. The judge also ordered the accused Haputhanthrige Don Ishan Lakmal, a resident of Hathara Ela in New Town, Polonnaruwa to pay Rs. 1 million as compensation to the family of Priyantha Sirisena and a fine of Rs. 20,000. If the accused fails to pay compensation, he will be sentenced to another two years of rigorous imprisonment and six months in prison if he does not pay the fine.
