Sri Lanka responds to media report on allegations of torture by government, assures investigations into the claims
Sri Lanka, today responding to an Associated Press report which alleged that dozens of Tamil men were raped and tortured by the government, stressed that the Government of Sri Lanka does not condone or tolerate any form of torture.
In a letter to the Editor of New York Times, which published the AP article titled 'Dozens of Men Describe Rape, Torture by Sri Lanka Government'on 8 November 2017, Sri Lanka's Foreign Secretary Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam said the National Unity government is firmly committed to uphold the rule of law.
The official said the Government of Sri Lanka strongly condemns any act of torture, and will ensure that allegations of torture committed in the country will be investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
