Additional compensation for Beruwala-Aluthgama victims

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the allocation of an additional Rs. 185 million towards the payment of further compensation for the damages caused to households, equipment, etc., during the public disturbances in Beruwala and Aluthgama in 2014. The government has already granted compensation for the properties damaged in the incidents allegedly caused by the Bodu Bala Sena and other groups. Accusations were also leveled against former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa that the attacks were carried out with his knowledge. Meanwhile, during an ifthar event in Colombo on June 8th, Rajapaksa has reportedly admitted that the government authorities at the time could have done more to settle disputes with the Muslim community. Regional and District Secretariats open on Sunday to provide disaster relief

The Minister of Home Affairs, Vajira Abeywardena said that all District Secretariats and Divisional Secretariats in the areas affected by bad weather conditions are kept open on Saturdays and Sundays and Divisional Secretariats will provide compensation for those affected. On the instructions of the Minister, the Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Neil de Alwis, has ordered the relevant Government Agents and Divisional Secretaries to keep the District Secretariats and Divisional Secretariats open on the holidays. According to the instructions, the affected people can get an advance compensation payment from the Divisional Secretariats for their houses damaged due to the inclement weather.
