Sri Lanka Labor Demand Survey 2017 identifies occupations demanded by private sector

On a request by the Policy Development Office of The Prime Minister's Office Sri Lanka's Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) has conducted the first ever survey on the labor demand in the country in 2017. The island wide survey supported by the International Labor Organization (ILO) aimed to identify the demand for employment requiring different skills and formulate appropriate policies related to education and vocational training in the country. The survey covered a sample of 3500 establishments covering the entire country. 2017 sinks to slowest economic growth in 16 years

Department of Census and Statistics releases official GDP data for 2017 Economy grew by 3.1%; agriculture down by 0.8%; industry grows by 3.9%, services by 3.2% The country’s economy in 2017 had grown by only 3.1%, the slowest rate in 16 years and lower than the 4.4% achieved in 2016, as per data released yesterday by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS). The Gross Domestic Product for Sri Lanka for 2017 (January to December) at constant (2010) price has reached Rs. 9,315,488 million while GDP value reported for 2016 was Rs. 9,034,290 million. The four major components of the economy - agriculture, industry, services and taxes – less subsidies on products have contributed their share to the GDP at a current price by 7.7%, 27.2%, 55.8% and 9.3% respectively for 2017. ...

Sri Lanka faces an acute manpower shortage, nearly half million job vacancies exist

Sri Lanka is facing an acute shortage of manpower for skilled labor, according to a survey conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) last year. According to the first ever establishment/enterprise survey carried out by the DCS to capture the labor demand in the country in 2017, the number of existing labor vacancies by June 2017 was estimated at 497,302 for various categories of jobs. Releasing the Report of the Labor Demand Survey- 2017, the Director General of DCS Dr. A.J. Satharasinghe stated that the main objective of this survey was to identify the highly demand occupations in country and estimate the demand in numbers. Computer Literacy among male higher than female – DCS

The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) has released the bulletin of the latest survey on computer literacy in Sri Lanka conducted during first six months of 2017. Director General of DCS Dr. Amara Satharasinghe said that Computer Literacy rate among those in the age group of aged 5-69 years of Sri Lanka has been estimated as 28.3 percent. The Urban sector reported the highest computer literacy rate of 41.1 percent among residential sectors while computer literacy rates of Rural and Estate sectors are 26.5 percent and 9.5 percent respectively. According to the findings of the survey, the computer literacy among male is 30.7 percent which is higher than that of female (26.1%).
