DG Indian Coast Guard meets SL Navy Commander

The Director General of Indian Coast Guard Vice Admiral Rajendra Singh who participated in the third Staff Talks between senior officers of Indian Coast Guard and Sri Lankan Coast Guard has called on the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Sirimewan Ranasinghe at the Naval Headquarters yesterday (9). Upon arrival, he was accorded with a Guard of Honour in accordance with naval traditions and received by Commander Western Naval Area Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna. During the cordial discussion, Commander of the Navy and Director General of Indian Coast Guard has shared thoughts on matters of bilateral interest and mutual importance as well and it culminated with exchange of mementos symbolizing the goodwill of both countries.

No egg imports to Sri Lanka from Monday as local production sufficient

The Department of Animal Production and Health has informed not to import eggs to Sri Lanka as there is sufficient local production. Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health Dr. Nihal Wedasinghe has informed the Minister of Rural Economy, P. Harrison, that there is no need for importation of eggs since the local production of eggs is exceeding the requirement. The Director General also states that measures have been taken to inform the Ports and Customs on the matter. The Minister has asked not to permit any institution to import eggs as the egg production is sufficient even for the upcoming festival season.

Cabinet nod to widen powers of the bribery and corruption commission

The government has taken steps to empower the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption to file cases based on the facts revealed by the commission's investigations. The need has arisen to take legal measures to empower the Director General of the Bribery or Corruption Commission to file cases under the Bribery Act or the Property and Liability Act, based on the findings of the commissions of Inquiry established under the Commission of Inquiry Act No. 17 of 1948. Therefore, for this purpose, amendments to the Commission of Inquiry Act No. 17 of 1948 have been drafted by the Legal Draftsman. Surgeries at Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital to be cancelled

Director General of the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, Dr. Susith Senaratne, stated that surgeries scheduled for today, January 8, will have to be canceled if nurses do not report to work. Nurses of the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital refrained from work, in protest against the newly introduced fingerprint system. While the authorities who implemented the system are of the view that this system will increase efficiency, trade unions say the fingerprint system is discriminates against the nursing staff. However, according to Chaminda Rodrigo, Secretary to the Nurses Association, all staff will be required to use the system.
