Striking university non-academic staff ordered to return to work by April 17

The Ministry of Higher Education yesterday ordered all the striking non-academic staff of all the universities of Sri Lanka to report to work before April 17. In a circular issued today, the Ministry of Higher Education said that all non-academic staff members, who are probationary, temporary, casual, substitute, training, on service assignments and serving on a contract basis, will be considered as vacated the post if they do not report to work before 17 April. The Ministry announced that for all permanent employees of all universities who do not report to work before April 17 and will continue the strike, the duration of their strike will be considered as a no-pay period according to the Commission Circular No 890 issued on 20017-06-07. Higher Education Minister looks into hostel issues at Ampara Hardy Technical College

The administration of Hardy Advanced Technological Institute in Ampara has agreed to provide prompt solutions to the residential issues of the students enrolled in full time courses at the institute. Ampara Hardy Advanced Technological Institute is governed by the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education (SLIATE), a statutory board under the purview of Ministry of Higher Education. Considering the views of both students and administration regarding the hostel issue, Minister of Higher Education and Highways Kabir Hashim instructed the administration to provide residential facilities for full time students. Minister denies claim that SLMC agrees to confer medical degrees to SAITM students after 5 weeks of training

The Ministry of Higher Education and Highways said that Minister Lakshman Kiriella has not made an announcement saying that Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) agreed to confer medical degrees to medical students of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) with five weeks of clinical training.
