Over 3,000 died in road accidents in Sri Lanka last year

Sri Lanka Police Headquarters say nearly 40,000 road accidents have been reported last year because of pedestrians as well as the motorists do not comply with the traffic rules. According to the Police Headquarters 3,100 people have died in road accidents during the year and another 8,303 were seriously injured. Most accidents occur due to drunk driving and negligent driving. Three wheelers were involved in most of the accidents mainly because they were overcrowded and carrying more people than it can safely accommodate. The police headquarters said that around 100,000 persons, who were caught violating or not adhering to traffic rules, were fined.

Several roads in Kotahena to close tonight

Police say the road from the Hettiyaawaththa roundabout, along the Kotahena Aluth Mawatha to Ramandan Mawatha will be closed from 9 p.m. today till midnight on the the 8th due to construction work to lay several piplines. Motorists are requested to use alternative roads during this time period. Meanwhile, the road leading to St Mary’s Mawatha from the Crow Island roundabout at the Mattakuliya Vystwyke Road will be closed between 9 p.m today to 8.00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Sri Pada pilgrims urged to refrain from bathing in Castlereagh and Maussakele reservoirs

Sri Lanka police request the Sri Pada pilgrims arriving through Hatton road to refrain from bathing in Castlereagh and Maussakele reservoirs. The police say bathing in the highly dense and extremely cold water in the two reservoirs is dangerous and asks the pilgrims to use the safe places that have been set up by the Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha for bathing along the Hatton Road. The police also caution the motorists to exercise caution when driving and parking their vehicles as the roads have numerous bends and slopes. Traffic congestion reported from several Southern Expressway exit points

The Road Development Authority says, traffic congestion is reported in areas close to the Welipenna and Kokmaduwa exit points, on the Southern Expressway, as a result of the Matugama and Kananke areas being inundated. Motorists have been requested to reduce their speeds to 60 kmph when driving along the Southern Expressway and exercise caution.

Restricted Rajagiriya traffic movement results in spillover congestion

Police say vehicular movement near Rajagiriya has been restricted as a result of the road construction work in the area. Police Media Spokesperson, SP Ruwan Gunesekera, said the move has resulted in heavy congestion in the area, for traffic that moves back and forth during rush hours. Police notes that this situation may continue till next week Police have instructed motorists who travel from Battaramulla, Malabe, Thalawathugoda, Thalangama, Athurugiriya to Colombo to use alternative routes.
