Australia partners with WFP, UNICEF to provide Rs. 89 mn assistance to Sri Lanka to prepare for natural disasters

The Government of Australia, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the UNICEF have launched a partnership to help communities in Sri Lanka prepare for and respond to natural disasters. According to the UN agencies, 96 percent of disasters in Sri Lanka are caused by climate, such as flooding, landslides, extreme winds and drought. Sri Lanka was ranked the fourth most climate change affected country in 2016 according to the Global Climate Risk Index, 2018. The annual cycle of floods and drought is causing severe household economic and social stress in Sri Lanka. Japanese technical support for Sri Lanka to manage natural disasters

Japan has agreed to provide technological know-how to Sri Lanka on handling natural disasters, Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has said. Minister Priyadarshana Yapa recently held discussions with the Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Keiichi Ishii, who is visiting Sri Lanka, on tackling natural disasters. According to the Minister a cooperation program is in progress between the two countries to cope with natural disasters and the Japanese Minister has arrived in the island to further discuss about the program. Navy celebrates 67th Anniversary

Sri Lanka Navy celebrated its 67th Anniversary today (9th Dec.). Anniversary celebrations were kicked off with a series of religious programs commencing from a flag blessing ceremony at the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. Major water project benefits 770, 000 people in North, NWP, NCP

The first phase of a huge water management project was launched for farmers in the dry zone recently. Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayake told that it would provide water for farmers in the North Central, North and North Western Provinces. The project will benefit around 770,000 people in the Malwathuoya, Meeoya and Yanoya river basins. It will enhance water supply systems, boost environment friendly agriculture, establish community base rural water schemes, and decentralize drinking water projects. Nobel prize winner Dr. Cardozo is to visit Northern Province

Nobel Laureate, Dr. Barbara Lopes Cardozo is to visit Sri Lanka to conduct research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) of war victims in the North. Dr. Barbara Cardozo has served in many countries, and is a founding member of Doctors Without Borders-Holland. She won the Nobel Price award in the year 1999 and has treated victims of natural disasters and man-made disasters. She is to visit the Northern Province, to observe incidence and cases  of post-traumatic stress disorder. Her tour is scheduled from   November 28 to December 1, 2017. She will also participate in several meetings with specialists in the field of psychiatry and community medicine in Jaffna and is to meet the Health Minister of the Northern Province.
