India Reposes Faith on One Man with Huge Expectations

By N.S.Venkataraman 2019 Parliamentary election in India is unique, since it has not been a contest between political parties but a contest between one man and several others who are pledged haters of the single man. People reposed faith on the one man and gave him a second term as Prime Minister of India. It is now necessary to view this scenario in an objective and dispassionate manner, without becoming emotional or carrying the love or hate for the one man to unreasonable level. During the last five years of Mr. Modi’s Prime Ministership, even his worst adversary was not daring enough to doubt or question his personal integrity and discipline and the capability to do hard work to fulfill his responsibility. Of course, some attempted to do so during the election campaign, which ...

Pardoning Gnanasara thero raises a number of very serious concerns – CPA

The Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) expresses its deep shock and concern over the Presidential pardon of Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, who was released from prison on 23rd May 2019. The pardon raises a number of pressing questions which the President and the government are obliged to answer. Gnanasara Thero was convicted of four contempt of court charges by the Court of Appeal on 8th August 2018 and sentenced to 19 years of rigorous imprisonment to be completed within 6 years. The conviction and sentencing was premised on the Thero’s behaviour within court premises which was judged to have been beyond the respectful behaviour expected of ordinary citizens before the courts. CPA stresses that presidential pardons exist to correct miscarriages of justice and are to be exercised...

Politics is a game played by corrupt elements

By Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne We hear the noise from all sides that politicians are corrupt and all are bandits of one kind or the other. The explanation is that is the nature of the game. Politics is a game played by corrupt elements. It is as simple as that. The telling line is this: 'Power consists of making others play your version of their reality'. Accordingly all politicians are automatically in a trap. One is not free to break out of this; hence they all become corrupt – that is the end of history. However, in this country in the past there were politicians who did not rob in any way, but spent their own money to serve the policies of their Government. This was true for all kinds of politicians; liberals, conservatives and Samasamajists. Even the most conservative politicia...
