Three Indian nationals smuggling gold arrested at Sri Lanka’s Colombo airport

Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested three Indian nationals smuggling over Rs. 5 million worth gold biscuits in their luggage. The trio had arrived in a SriLankan Airlines flight from Chennai, India on Thursday (22) afternoon. The Customs officials found the gold biscuits hidden in the handles of their traveling bags when the bags were x-rayed. It is estimated that the gold stock is worth Rs. 5.5 million. Director of Customs O.S. M. Jamier and Deputy Customs Director Vipula Minuwanpitiya are conducting further investigations.

Commission to be appointed to look into Airline issues

President Maithripala Sirisena has stated that a Commission will be appointed to look into the issues of Sri Lankan Airlines and Mihin Lanka -after the Bond Commission report has been submitted. The head of state has emphasised that he will not give up his commitment towards clean politics, no matter what challenges he would come across. The president also pointed out the need of strengthening the SLFP as a pure political entity, adding that a political movement that is loyal to the nation cannot be built without strengthening the SLFP. Furthermore, President Sirisena stated that the local government elections cannot be won by means of state, capitalist or official power. He added that this election is one which can be won with intelligence – given the new system.

SriLankan Airlines Chairman has issued a communique it’s employees saying the Airline is facing a risk of shutting down. The Chairman Ajith Dias says the Airline is operationally cash flow deficient, and their costs exceed the income by a wide margin.
