Supreme Court sets date to hear Ranjan’s contempt case

The Supreme Court has decided to hear inquiry on the contempt of court case against Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake from December 10, 2018. The case was taken up before the three-member judge bench comprising Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Justice Vijith K. Malalgoda and Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya. The defendant, Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment Ranjan Ramanayake, also appeared before the court when the case was taken up. The Attorney General presented an evidence list consisting 14 individuals and 8 items of evidence, which includes four CDs containing the deputy minister’s statement and four news reports containing the statement. Vidya’s murder: appeals by convicts to be taken up in December

The appeals filed by the seven suspects, sentenced to death over the gang rape and murder of the schoolgirl Sivaloganathan Vidya, were ordered to be taken up for consideration on December 13 by the Supreme Court. The applications, demanding the exemption from the punishment of the defendants, were taken up today (09) before the three-judge bench comprising the Supreme Court Justices Eva Wanasundara, Nalin Perera and Prasanna Jayawardena. Sri Lanka's Supreme Court granted leave to proceed with the fundamental rights petition filed by a group of women activists requesting the court to declare the gazette issued by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, barring women from buying liquor or working in establishments that sell liquor illegal. The petition was filed by eleven women activists and Women and Media Collectives in Colombo against the gazette notification issued by the Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera reinstating the ban. Former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva Silva’s fundamental rights petition rejected

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court today rejected a fundamental rights petition filed by former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva against the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act without proceeding. The petition was rejected by a majority of the three- judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising the Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Justice Buwaneka Aluvihare and Justice Nalin Perera. Former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva in his petition said that the passage of the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act in parliament by a two-third majority without holding a public referendum was unlawful. However, the Attorney General and several other parties raised objections to the petition stating that the Act has been passed in parliament and therefore it cannot be questioned before judiciary....

FR petition filed by former CJ against PC Elections Act rejected

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva against the Provincial Councils (PC) Elections (Amendment) Act was rejected by the Supreme Court today. The petition was rejected by a majority in the three-member bench. Sarath N Silva filed the petition at the Supreme Court against the Provincial Council Elections Amendment Act in September last year. National Audit bill is consistent with Constitution, Speaker informs Supreme Court decision

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya informed parliament on Wednesday (May 9th) that the National Audit Bill is in accordance with the constitution. The Supreme Court has made the determination on the Bill entitled "National Audit" considering a petition against the bill filed in the Supreme Court in terms of Article 121(1) of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has determined that the Bill is not inconsistent with the Constitution. The National Audit Bill was approved by the Cabinet in February this year. The bill was initially expected to come into effect in March, 2015 under the 100-day program of the National Government. The Speaker ordered the determination of the Supreme Court be printed in the Official Report of today's proceedings.

The Judicature (Amendment) Bill aimed for the establishment of a three-member High Court to hear large-scale crimes and bribery and corruption cases will be tabled in parliament on Wednesday (May 09) and get it passed, the Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms Thalatha Atukorala said. Addressing a media briefing at the Department of Government Information today, the Minister said the government hopes to get the bill passed by a simple majority vote after revisions have been made to the clauses that needed two-third majority as decided by the Supreme Court. The Commissioners of the Bribery Commission have petitioned the Supreme Court to suspend a stay order issued by the apex court preventing the proceedings of a case filed against the former Chief Justice Mohan Peiris in the Colombo Magistrate's Court. The petition was filed by the three commissioners of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption including its Chairman, retired Supreme Court Judge T.B. Weerasuriya.
