Train engine drivers’ strike ends

The strike launched by the train engine drivers and guards from Tuesday night has been suspended following discussions with authorities.

The Locomotive Engine Drivers Union has decided to end the strike action following a discussion held this morning with General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways SM Abeywickrama.

The Railway Employees Union has commenced trade union action on the basis of several demands.

Locomotive Engine Drivers Union Secretary Indika Dodamgoda said that there are a number of demands to be addressed including the extension of time period of employees recruited on contract basis

Meanwhile, several train services, mainly the office train and two express trains, have been cancelled due to the trade union action. Accordingly, train services from Chilaw to Colombo, Mount Lavinia to Kankasanthurai and the train from Colombo to Batticaloa have been cancelled.
