During a discussion held at Temple Trees with the participation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Urban Development Authority revealed that the Welikada prison chapel ward and prison headquarters have been allocated for building a luxury hotel.
The Government previously announced that the prison complex will be moved to 200 acres of land in Millewa, Horana by 2024 at a cost of Rs 30 billion.
The 42-acre land where the prison is currently situated will be transferred to the Urban Development Authority once the move is completed, where the land can be provided on a long-term lease to local and foreign investors selected for implementing development projects.
