India builds makeshift funeral pyres as deaths skyrocket

India reported 3,285 Covid-19 related deaths yesterday (27), the first time the country’s daily death toll exceeded 3,000.

Crematoriums in Delhi have been forced to make funeral pyres in parks and utilise other vacant spaces as the city runs out of space to cremate its dead.

One official told the Indian Express newspaper that there was a waiting time of three to four hours for cremation, with each body taking up to six hours to burn.

The authorities have reportedly cut down trees in Delhi parks to use as kindling on funeral pyres.
