Sri Lanka Customs bust an international gold racket making it the largest gold bust made in the country.
17 kilos of gold biscuits worth over Rs. 220 million were sized on Saturday (Apr 03) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The Customs Narcotic Control Unit arrested a janitor employed at the BIA, who attempted to sneak out the stock of gold that had been left in the toilet by an arriving passenger, by concealing it in a floor polishing machine.
Investigations revealed that the gold was covered in polythene and concealed inside the toilet drain, which had later been collected by the janitor.
The janitor was carrying 161 gold biscuits when he was stopped and searched by the authorities.
Three parcels containing 1.5 kilos of gold jewellery was found in another toilet in the Arrivals Terminal.
The janitor has been detained for further investigations.
