Intelligence units it is learnt have found that certain groups including several police officers with close links to former President MP Mahinda Rajapaksa were behind the instigation of racial violence in the Theldeniya area in Kandy.
The Cabinet of Ministers who met yesterday has discussed the tense situation in Kandy at length.
During the discussion it had been revealed that certain sections in the police have failed to take necessary action to prevent the tense situation from intensifying.
It had also been revealed that the Theldeniya ASP and the Digana HQI were formerly attached to the Tangalle Police and are closely linked to Rajapaksa.
According to intelligence units, the spate of racial violence in the country is a plot by certain sections in the opposition to instill fear and terror in the minds of the people in order to promote “a hero” figure targeting the 2020 Presidential election.
