A Sri Lankan court today granted bail to the two top Sri Lankan government officials, who had been in remand custody for accepting a bribe of Rs. 20 million.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dassanayake today granted bail to President’s former Chief of Staff I.H.K. Mahanama and former State Timber Corporation Chairman P. Dissanayake.

The Magistrate released the two suspects each on cash bail of Rs.100, 000 and three sureties of Rs.2 million each. The Magistrate stated that one of the sureties should be a close relative of the suspects.

The court then ordered the case to be called on December 11.

The Magistrate granted bail to the suspects after severely reprimanding the Bribery Commission for presenting a remand order that was not prepared properly.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the two officials while accepting a bribe of Rs 20 million on 3rd May from an Indian businessman. They had allegedly requested a bribe of Rs 100 million from the Indian businessman with regards to a deal on the shares of the Kantale sugar factory and had accepted part of it, Rs 20 million, as an initial payment
