MP Buddhika Pathirana sworn in as Deputy Minister of Industries and Commerce

Matara district MP Buddhika Pathirana was sworn in as the Deputy Minister of Industries and Commerce before President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat, yesterday (19). Secretary to the President Mr. Austin Fernando was also present on this occasion, the President's Media Division said. MP Buddhika Pathirana was in Japan when two new state ministers and five new deputy ministers were sworn in last week and returned to the island on Sunday.

UNP’s Kumarasiri appointed Deputy Speaker

Monaragala District UNP MP Ananda Kumarasiri was elected as the Deputy Speaker of parliament following a secret ballot held in Parliament this evening. MP Kumarasiri has garnered 97 votes while UPFA MP Sudarshani Fernandopulle has received only 53 votes. Kumarasiri’s name was proposed by UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana while Fernandopulle’s name was proposed by UPFA MP S.B. Dissanayake.

Sri Lanka to bring back asylum seekers detained in Australian offshore detention centers

Sri Lanka Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tilak Marapana says that, arrangements will be made to bring back the Sri Lankans who are not eligible for citizenship in Australia and detained in Australia's offshore detention centers in South Pacific islands of Christmas Island, Papua New Guinea, and Nauru.
