SLMC Leader, Urban Planning and Water Resources Minister Rauf Hakeem and ACMC Leader, Industries and Commerce Minister Rishard Bathiudeen have clashed in the Cabinet meeting yesterday over a Cabinet paper on the resettlement of Muslim persons in the Northern Province. The Cabinet paper has reportedly resulted in a heated exchange of words between Hakeem and Bathiudeen. The relevant Cabinet paper was presented by Minister Hakeem. However, Bathiudeen has claimed that he could not support any proposal that would not mete out a fair treatment for the many war displaced Muslim persons from the North. Single Window Investment Facilitation Taskforce approved

The Development Strategies and International Trade Ministry submitted a Cabinet paper, which was approved, to establish a Single Window Investment Facilitation Taskforce to assist investors to fast-track their investments. This is the latest in a slew of efforts by the Government to reduce red tape and fast-track investment. The taskforce is expected to assist investors to get as many as 14 approvals from different government organisations, departments and institutions to enable investors to begin work as soon as possible. It is aimed at increasing exports and attracting investment.

New Agriculture Minister to promote organic farming

The first cabinet paper to be submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture after the reassignment of ministers next week will put forward a proposal by the new Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera to promote organic farming. Minister Amaraweera said that as the new subject minister he will submit the first Cabinet paper for the promotion of organic agriculture without the use of toxic agrochemicals to the Cabinet of Ministers for approval. At present, 3801 farmers in Sri Lanka are cultivating paddy under organic farming on 4955 acres. Sri Lanka aims to reduce public debt to 70 percent of GDP

The Sri Lankan government plans to reduce the country's public debt to 70 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the end of year 2020. The government plans to achieve this target by increasing the revenues and decelerating debt accumulation. On a request made by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management (CCEM), the Governor of the Central Bank on November 1, 2017 has presented the options available to bring down debt to GDP ratio to the CCEM. Various Investment Houses have also presented proposals to manage public debt more favorably. Cabinet paper submitted over Norochcholai, Trinco coal power plants

A cabinet paper has been submitted seeking approval to construct two coal power plants in Trincomalee and Norochcholai, that would generate a total of 1,200 mega watts. Ministers Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Ranjith Siyambalapitiya had forwarded a Joint Cabinet paper on November 23. The Cabinet paper suggests that high efficiency coal power plants that would generate 600 MW, should be constructed in the aul point area in Trincomalee and Norochcholai. The document states, a land mass of 600 acres is required in the Foul Point area while, 500 acres of land is required in the Norochcholai area for the construction of these two power plants.
