Sri Lanka Navy, Coast Guard assist repatriation 5 Sri Lankan fishermen released from Indian custody

Sri Lanka Navy and Coast Guard assisted the repatriation of five Sri Lankan fishermen released from Indian custody on Tuesday and brought them home. The Indian Coast Guard in March arrested the five fishermen from Sri Lanka for violating the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and poaching Indian marine resources near Kodiyakkarai in the district. The repatriation of fishermen took place at the IMBL north of Kankasanthurai. Indian Coast Guard Ship 'Ameya' handed the five fishermen to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard's Fast Attack Craft CG 402. The released fishermen were escorted by the Navy and Coast Guard to the Kankasanthurai harbor, and handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna. Sri Lanka Coast Guard lifeguards save over 1000 lives

Sri Lanka Coast Guard lifeguards reached another important milestone in their lifesaving activities passing the 1000 mark in rescued lives when lifesavers attached to the Hikkaduwa lifesaving station rescued three local youth from being swept away to sea. The three youth, aged between 19 - 21 years are residents of the Gampaha District were saved by Coast Guard lifeguards on duty at the popular southern beach in Hikkaduwa last week (17th April). This is a significant achievement for the Coast Guard lifesaving activities which began in 2009 with a small lifesaving team deployed at the popular Mirissa beach in the Southern coast. Sri Lanka Navy, in accordance with naval traditions, welcomed Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) ship Akebono arrived at the Port of Hambantota yesterday on a goodwill visit. U.S. offers Sri Lanka a second Coast Guard cutter to protect island nation’s sea lines of trade and communication

As a sign of strong bilateral ties and deepening U.S. engagement in Sri Lanka, the United States announced it will offer a second U.S. Coast Guard cutter to the Sri Lankan Navy, pending completion of Congressional notification.
