SLFP Central Committee to meet today

The Central Committee of Sri Lanka Freedom Party is scheduled to meet today (09) at 7 pm, party sources said. The meeting will be held under the patronage of the party leader, President Maithripala Sirisena at the President's official residence. Local media reported that the discussions are expected to focus on the complaint made to the President by the United National Party that the government cannot function with the SLFP ministers, who voted for the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

A national plan to combat bribery and corruption – first round of discussions to commence shortly

The first round of discussions to formulate a national plan to combat bribery and corruption will be held today. The discussions will be chaired by the Presidential Secretary, Austin Fernando, at the Presidential Secretariat. Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Sarath Jayamanne, said the Secretaries to the Ministries, the Attorney General, the Auditor General, public officers, heads of the private sector and representatives of civil organizations are scheduled to participate in the discussions.

Puttalam, Kandy, Batticaloa leaders among groups to attend Elections Commission discussion

The Elections Commission has decided to hold discussions with independent groups with regard to issues that have risen in conducting the upcoming local government elections. Chairman, Mahinda Deshapriya, said an additional Elections Commissioner hoped to take part in the discussions. He further added, the discussions were to be held with the leaders of independent groups of the Western Province, Southern Province, Puttalam, Kandy, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa and Vavuniya. The discussions are scheduled to take place in Colombo on January 18, in Kandy on January 19 and in Vavuniya and Batticaloa on January 20, in Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Railway strike rages on no sign of ending Amunugama-headed Ministerial Committee appointed

BY Kavindya Chris Thomas and Shaahidah Riza A five-member Ministerial Committee was appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers yesterday (12), to inquire into the issues put forward by Railway trade unions and to hold discussions with those engaged in the ongoing strike. The committee, led by Minister of Special Assignments Dr. Sarath Amunugama, was announced yesterday at a press briefing. A Gazette Notification was also issued declaring Railways as an essential service. Based on this special Gazette notification, the Department of Railways announced that Railway employees, who do not report to work, will be considered as having vacated their posts.
