Weeratunge’s extradition poses a problem

Sri Lankan authorities have been notified by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through the Interpol to furnish the relevant documents in line with extradition laws in order to extradite former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunge.

Weeratunge is being held by the UAE authorities.

The UAE has reportedly said that Udayanga is being held over the alleged violation of UAE immigration and emigration laws and prior to extraditing him to the country he came from after imposing a fine, the relevant documentation needs to be produced.

However, the documents required by Interpol for the extradition are unavailable since there are no legal charges filed directly against Weeratunge.

Police sources say that there is also no charge sheet against Weeratunge before courts and since he is only wanted to record a statement to determine if a crime has been committed producing the documentation requested by Interpol has become problematic.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant against Weeratunge due to his failure to appear in court on three occasions despite summons being served.
