Sri Lankan President promises to punish those involved in malpractices at national airlines

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena, who is on a mission to eliminate fraud and corruption in government, pledged to punish those who are responsible for the malpractices at the national airlines.

Speaking at an election rally held Sunday in Thambala, Polonnaruwa, President Sirisena said the Presidential Commission to inquire into allegations of large scale frauds and malpractices in the national airlines is proceeding successfully and those who are responsible for frauds will be revealed to the country shortly and they will be prosecuted.

President Sirisena last week appointed a five-member presidential commission to probe the alleged misconduct in the national carrier SriLankan Airlines, its catering service SriLankan Catering and the now defunct budget carrier Mihin Lanka.

Speaking further at the rally, the President emphasized the need for a system based on the unity of the people to develop the country rather than a society of divided communities.

“Everybody should gather without any differences in race, religion, party or color,” said the President.

Joining a meeting at Thalapatha, Polonnaruwa, the President mentioned the need of an impartial service towards the country, irrespective of political ideologies and said he would take such steps to mobilize people for that purpose.

Addressing a rally in Aralaganwila, Polonnaruwa, yesterday, President Sirisena challenged all party leaders to come for a face-to-face meeting to discuss on bribery, corruption, waste and murders on one stage truthfully and honestly, if they can.

“The people should decide whether the political parties protecting robbers or parties punishing robbers should win in this election,” said the President.

President Sirisena said that he asks the people to vote for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) because he needs the support for his policy to fight against bribery and corruption and not for his individual needs. Then the plans to develop the country within clean political background can be accelerated, said the President.

The rallies were held to ensure the victory of the candidates of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in Polonnaruwa district.
