THE MALAYSIA QUESTION

Malaysia’s former Prime Minister made a fleeting visit to Sri Lanka in December 2017. It was a state visit and he was accorded full honours as befitting his position at the time.

However there were questions as to why Sri Lanka – fighting its own battles against graft and political patronage – would wish to host a Prime Minister who was openly named by the US Department of Justice as being involved in a huge fraud that cost the Malaysian people a significant loss of state revenues.

The discovery of a sum of Sri Lankan currency – said to be in the region of Rs 28 Million – has thrown the current government into tailspin. Questions are now being raised as to how the Malaysian Prime Minister had a stash of Sri Lanka currency when it is not a freely convertible currency.

A frantic search is being made by journalists to discover quite who met the visiting Prime Minister of Malaysia – to investigate if the private sector had anything to do with the stash of Lankan currency said to have been found at a Najib Razak residence in Kuala Lumpur.

The release of the Sarawak Report has meant that some analysts have referred to Imelda Marcos as a ‘cheapskate amateur’ when compared to Najib Razak’s wife, Rosmah.

Malaysia is bracing itself for months of entertaining revelations in connection with the excesses of the Razak family as well as at least five cases of murder which are being currently investigated.

In the meantime Anwar Ibrahim the unsung hero is expected to re-join mainstream politics in Malaysia over the next few weeks.
