A 60-year-old female has been sentenced to life imprisonment for smuggling in heroin to the Welikada Prison in 2013.
The sentence has been issued by Colombo High Court Judge Pradeep Hettiarachchi.
The woman in question, remanded in August 2013 over an order of the Maligakanda Magistrate, was arrested while attempting to smuggle 3.6 grams of heroin in 216 plastic packets concealed in her genital area.
Following a lengthy trial, the Colombo High Court Judge today (17) declared that the charges of possession and smuggling of heroin against her have been proven without reasonable doubt.
However, the defending lawyer requested the court for a lax sentence as the woman found guilty is 60 years of age.
Considering the submissions, Judge Hettiarachchi sentenced her to life imprisonment.
