According to the Guardian, Sri Lankan-born consultant physician Dr Maheshi Ramasamy is among the investigators involved in the creation of the Oxford Covid-19 Vaccine.
Interim data suggests 70% protection, but the researchers say the figure may be as high as 90% by tweaking the dose.
The Oxford Vaccine is cheaper and easier to store in comparison to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that showed 95% protection.

Commenting on the vaccine, Sri Lankan-born consultant physician Dr Ramasamy said older adults are a priority group for the Covid-19 vaccination because they are at increased risk of severe disease, but it is known that they tend to have poorer responses to the vaccine.
“We were pleased to see that our vaccine was not only well-tolerated in older adults, but also stimulated similar immune responses to those seen in younger volunteers. The next step will be to see if this translates into protection from the disease itself,” Dr Ramasamy added.
