PCR Testing at Airport : SLMA writes to Health Minister

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has called on the Government to implement PCR testing on all overseas arrivals in a bid to detect the new COVID variant, Omicron.

Sri Lanka yesterday detected it’s first Omicron infection in a person who had returned from South Africa.

Issuing a statement, the SLMA said it was necessary to be vigilant on the possibility of the variant entering through travellers from other countries as well.

The Association said as the variant has now been detected in over 30 countries all travellers entering Sri Lanka must be subject to PCR test at the airport prior to being allowed to enter the community.

The SLMA further highlighted that it would be extremely important to delay the entry of the variant to Sri Lanka, until more scientific information on the variant is available.

It also emphasized the need for stringent preventive measures until at least more people above th age of 60 in th country have received the booster COVID vaccine shot. (NewsWire)
