President Gothabya Rajapaksa will issue a statement denying that Mr Cabraal has been asked to step down as Guvnor of the Central Bank. It is understood that President Rajapaksa will express the fullest confidence in his choice of Guvnor of the Central Bank. Mr Cabraal is serving the balance of his predecessors term which comes to an end in June 2022. There is no mention of a full term contract at this time and it is usual for new contracts to be given approximately a fortnight before the expiry of a current term of office.
The IMF are not in the habit of making suggestions in terms of who should serve in various positions including that of the Guvnor and the Minister of Finance.
