21A draft presented to Cabinet

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe yesterday presented the draft of the 21st Amendment to the Cabinet.

The Committee appointed by Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe on the 21st Amendment discussed the draft and decided to present it to the Cabinet, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday in a video communiqué.

“We have been informed to discuss the draft concerned in Cabinet and to provide copies of it to party leaders in Parliament,” said Wickremesinghe.

“Accordingly, Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe will ensure that the party leaders will get copies of the draft of the 21 st amendment,” he said.

“We plan to get their inputs by Friday. A draft thus completed will be prepared on Friday with these inputs and the amendments, which will be presented to the Cabinet,” he said.

We will then take steps to publish it in the gazette so that those wishing to go to Supreme Court will have the opportunity to go there about it.

We plan to get this draft approved by everyone without delay.

The 21st Amendment seeks to transfer the executive powers of the President to the Cabinet of Ministers by way of urgent constitutional reform to make the President answerable to Parliament and the people, among other things, Justice Ministry sources told the Daily New.
