Sri Lanka Supreme court has postponed the hearing of a fundamental rights petition filed by joint opposition parliamentarian Kumara Welgama seeking the issue of an order preventing his arrest by the Police Financial Investigations Crime Division (FCID) to 15th October.
The former minister of Transport in his petition states that the Financial Investigations Crime Division is planning to arrest him over alleged irregularities in procurement and supply of tax exempted motor spare parts for the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) during the previous regime and seeks the Supreme Court to issue an order against his arrest by the FCID.
Welgama has asked the Supreme Court to issue an order preventing him from taking into custody without any justifiable reason.
When the FR case was taken for hearing Thursday, the Attorney General said that preliminary inquiries were in progress with respect to the allegations. Accordingly the consideration of this petition was postponed until the 15th of October.
When the petition was taken up before the three-member Panel of Judges Eva Wanasundera, Nalin Perera and Prasanna Jayawardena, the State Counsel informed the Court that further investigations are being carried out into the allegations.
Subsequently, the court ordered the petition to be called on October 15 and ordered the State Counsel to report the progress of investigations.
