The National Export Strategy (NES) to raise export earnings in six priority sectors including information technology, health tourism, processed food will be presented to the cabinet for approval soon.
Sri Lanka is a country that has been involved in international trade and is currently supporting the World Trade Facilitation Agreement implemented by two third of member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Nonetheless, Sri Lanka is still without a national export development strategy and the government’s future programs are expected to rectify this long-term shortcoming, the Central Bank says.
The National Export Strategy has been developed by private and public stakeholders through extensive consultations initiated by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last year. The six priority sectors identified at the consultations are ICT, Health and Wellness Tourism, Spice Concentrates, Boat Building, Processed Food & Beverages, and Electronic, Electrical and Machinery.
Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade, Export Development Board and Department of Commerce are engaged in consultations with the private and public stakeholders in the preparation of the National Export Strategy.
