Two dead, two injured after being hit by a train in Ragama

Two persons have died while two others sustained injuries this morning (27) after being knocked down by the ‘Siyane Kumari’ express train en route to Matara from Kandy, the police said. It was reported that the train has been stopped past Ragama railway station following the accident. The trains that were scheduled to commute from the Ragama railway station have been delayed owing to the accident. The injured persons are in a critical condition, according to the sources.

Over 100 towns in Sri Lanka stop cigarette sales

Over 100 towns across Sri Lanka have boycotted the sale of cigarettes with the aim of making the country tobacco-free, the Health Ministry said. According to the ministry, the Public Health Inspectors Union launched several programmes across the country to educate locals on the ill effects of smoking and as a result, shop owners and businessmen in many towns stopped selling cigarettes. Twenty-two towns in Jaffna, 17 towns in Matara and 16 towns in Kurunegala joined others in boycotting the sale of cigarettes. Currently, 107 towns are part of the drive, Xinhua news agency reported. Five monks further remanded over ragging incident

Five Buddhist monks, who were second year students at the Faculty of Humanities in University of Ruhuna, have been further remanded over a case of ragging at the Bhikkhu Hostel in Eliya-Kanda area in Matara. The monks, charged under the Ragging Act, were produced before the Matara Chief Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathirana yesterday (20) and ordered to be further remanded until November 3. The incident had taken place on July 18 and the student monk, who had fell victim to the ragging by the senior monks, has halted his higher education as of now, said Matara police.

Construction work on the first phase of the Extension of Southern Expressway (ESEP) from Matara to Hambantota including Expressway link to Mattala has exceeded its target, the Road Development Authority (RDA) says. Construction of 96 km long four lane Expressway is split into four sections namely Matara - Beliatta (30km), Beliatta - Wetiya (26km), Wetiya - Andarawewa (15km) and Mattala - Hambantota via Andarawewa (25km). The expressway is being constructed as an extension of the Southern Expressway which ends in Godagama, Matara. In the first section interchanges will be constructed in Aparekka and Beliatta areas. Sri Lanka Army said currently 300 members of the Army, together with Navy and Air Force personnel are currently engaged in flood relief emergencies in worst-affected Districts of Galle, Kalutara, Matara, Ratnapura and Puttalam as of Tuesday (22) noon. The Army Media Unit said another contingent of about 1000 Army personnel, if needed are on standby in flood-hit areas in close contact with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and respective District and Divisional Secretariats to face any emergencies. The Office of Missing Persons (OMP) in Sri Lanka will set up 12 regional offices covering the entire country to receive information and complaints from families and other individuals of the missing persons, the OMP Chairman President's Counsel Saliya Peiris told media after the OMP held its second meeting in Matara.
