Sri Lanka significantly improves in press freedom climbing 10 notches in World Press Freedom Index

According to a leading survey, Sri Lanka showed significant improvement in press freedom last year ranking 10 notches higher than last year in the World Press Freedom Index 2018. The annual World Press Freedom Index for 2018 compiled by Paris based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranked Sri Lanka 131st out of180 countries climbing 10 notches from 141st in 2017. The overall global score improved to 41.37 this year from 44.34 in 2017 on a 0-100 scale with 100 being the worst. The Index ranks 180 countries according to the level of freedom available to journalists. Sri Lanka's Minister of Finance and Mass Media says the general public has lost confidence in traditional journalists and media due to the excessive use of smart phones which has resulted in deterioration of quality and standard of the news. PM signs proposed criteria for media to be presented in Parliament

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Tuesday signed the proposed criteria for media to be presented to parliament on the conduct of an unbiased and just election according to the constitution. The Prime Minister signed the documents, after engaging in religious observance, as his inaugural duty of the New Year, yesterday at the Temple Trees. This criteria to media were announced by the Election Commission through a government gazette on 4th December. The guidelines are aimed at ensuring a fair and impartial election according to the Constitution. The guidelines which have been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers will gain legal status once they are approved in parliament. Many are the claims that abound on our island nation. Our Prime Minister was to recently claim to be saddened by the unwarranted ‘attacks’ which in his opinion was being carried out by the media for – according to his gospel – unwarranted reasons. This is rich coming from a man who has manoeuvred his continued position as leader of the United National Party (UNP) for well-nigh 23 years. He has from time to time readjusted the rules and most times nominated members loyal to him to the Working Committee of the UNP. So much of manoeuvring that some of his detractors say the only way for change would be in effect after the demise of the incumbent leader. For progress and evolution that is pretty bad news indeed.
