Court orders a psychological evaluation on cricketer Ramith Rambukwella, suspends driver’s license

The Colombo Traffic Court has ordered to suspend the driver’s license of the cricketer Ramith Rambukwella, who was charged with drunk driving and several other violations.

The Magistrate also issued an order to produce Rambukwella at the Medical Council attached to the Ministry of Transport in Nugegoda to subject him to a mental and physical evaluation and obtain a report on his condition.

Colombo Traffic Magistrate Chandana Kalansuriya issued the order after considering a charge sheet filed by the Narahenpita Police against Ramith Rambukwella.

Narahenpita Police today filed four charges including driving drunk in Narahenpita Police Division on Saturday (10), failing to take measures to avoid an accident, and failing to report the accident to the police.

Ramith Rambukwella pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Accordingly, the Colombo Traffic Magistrate released Rambukwella on a Rs. 500,000 personal bail and fixed the case to be heard on 19th of June.

Orders were also issued to the witnesses to appear before the court on that day.

In an earlier occasion also in 2016 Ramith Rambukwella was arrested by police on suspicion of a single-vehicle accident while driving under the influence.

Rambukwella, returning home from a cricket tour in West Indies in 2013, caused a stir on a British Airways flight when he, under an inebriated state, attempted to open the cabin door in mid-air mistaking it for the toilet door. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) fined Rambukwella, 50 percent of his tour fee for his misconduct onboard the flight.
