President orders action against garbage dumping near Parakrama Samudraya

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today instructed the relevant officials to take initiatives for the immediate resolution of the garbage issue near the Parakrama Samudraya in Polonnaruwa.

The piling up of garbage on the reservoir’s levee has drawn President’s attention when he was engaging in physical fitness activities near the Parakrama Samudraya Monday morning.

The natural beauty of the Parakrama Samudraya which is considered as a jewel in the historical Polonnaruwa city has lately been shattered by the indiscriminate dumping of garbage near the reservoir and on its levee.

The President witnessing haphazard disposal of solid waste has immediately summoned all the officials relevant to the site and instructed them to promptly resolve the issue.

The President ordered the officials to install proper garbage receptacles and take legal action against those who dump garbage indiscriminately.

President Sirisena also ordered the officials to follow-up on the measures frequently.

The President emphasized the importance of safeguarding the value of the Parakrama Samudra, a historical heritage, and enabling the people to enjoy it freely in a healthy environment.

The President informed the officials to maintain the environment in an attractive manner for the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arriving in the Polonnaruwa historic city for Poson and providing facilities for them.
